Ketones and carbinols are important classes of industrial chemicals widely used as solvents and chemical intermediates. They are known for being strong, versatile organic solvents and therefore are essential components of many consumer and commercial products. Ketones are used safely and effectively in everyday products such as paints, adhesives, printing inks and cleaners; while carbonyls can be utilized for a wide variety of applications including fuel and lubrication additives, mining applications, and plasticizers.
The coatings industry uses ketones extensively as solvents for nitrocellulose and other cellulose esters, resins, and for vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate. These solvents can be used either as active solvents or dilutents, often in combination with other solvents. Their strong solvency, paired with low density, make them desirable solvents for meeting Volatile Organic Compound regulations. Carbonyls are utilized by the coatings indsutry as stablilizers, plasticizers and additives, and are often utilized as preservatives and intermediates for numerous industries.
